Chapter 7:

How To Cast A Magick Circle And Set Up Your Wiccan Altar

The Wiccan beliefs are all connected to the origins of Pagan rituals and witchcraft. Many of the rituals and castings come from ancient notions and concepts of how Magick is created and the casting of the circle and setting of the altarpieces is no different. The practice of engaging with this part of your Magick practice is where you will usually always begin. This is the foundation of your house of Magick and as you get better acquainted with your purpose and intentions, your altar will evolve with you and your circle will show up for you every time.

There are so many different ways that Wiccans will perform these steps and after several years of working with many different paths, practices, people, and on my own, I have distilled the basics down to a simple set of steps to help you get your footing with these magic principles.

You will need some equipment and tools and a lot of it you probably have lying around the house or being used for other things. A rule of thumb if you are gathering items for your rituals and spells from your kitchen or other household items: purify your tools ahead of time. You may recall from the chapter on rituals and preparations that it is important to purify yourself and your space before beginning a ritual. The same is true of objects and tools that you will use, especially if they have never been used for Magick before or are regularly used and need to be purified before another use.

There are a lot of different options for what you can use and in Chapter 10 I will go into greater detail about the Wiccan tools and what each one is used for. For now, your focus can be on casting the circle and preparing your altar. You also can cast a circle without any objects or tools at all and as you get familiar with the practice, you will understand what I mean.

The Circle

A Magick circle is a sacred space. It is the way that all witches begin their journey of connection to their sacred energy and the energy of Spirit. The circle represents many things symbolically and historically. A circle is a ring that has no beginning or end and is eternal, constantly flowing and direct in its force. A circle, or ring, is also a symbol of sacred union.

In the craft, the Magick circle is your source of protection and the place where you contain all of the energy of your Magick. It is the home you create for yourself while you cast and as you work with the energy available from within the circle of energy, power, and protection. The sacred reality of any circle you cast is that it is an invisible realm of sanctity and blessing that is a powerful shield to unwanted influences. It holds you in and keeps other things out, or vice versa depending on the Magick you are conjuring.
